Pequignet

French manufacture watchmaking, only mechanical caliber entirely designed and assembled in France (Calibre Royale)

🇫🇷 France, Morteau Founded in 1973 $$$$

Philosophy

Prove that manufacture watchmaking can exist in France. Pequignet nearly vanished for this dream, but the Calibre Royale is here: a French mechanical movement, designed and assembled in Morteau by 47 artisans.

History

Morteau, Haut-Doubs, 1973. Émile Pequignet is a horse breeder. Not a watchmaker, a horse breeder. But passionate about watches, he founds his brand in the Haut-Doubs, a stone's throw from the Swiss border, in what's called the 'cradle of French watchmaking.'

For 30 years, Pequignet makes honest watches with Swiss movements, like many French brands. Then in 2006, under Didier Leibundgut (ex-Zenith), the audacious bet is placed: create an entirely French manufacture caliber.

In 2010, the Calibre Royale is born. The only mechanical movement entirely designed and assembled in France. Not 'assembled in France with Swiss components', designed AND assembled. It's a feat in a world where even prestigious Swiss brands buy movements from ETA or Sellita.

But the ambition nearly kills the brand. In 2012, Pequignet teeters on bankruptcy. Calibre Royale development costs devoured reserves. Laurent Katz and Philippe Spruch, two former LaCie executives, buy and save the brand.

Today: 47 artisans in Morteau. EPV since 2025. The Calibre Royale exists in several versions (automatic, GMT, chronograph). Watches sell between €3,000 and €15,000, a fraction of a comparable Swiss manufacture's price.

The positioning is unique: the only French manufacture alternative to Swiss hegemony. In a watch world where 'Swiss Made' is the magic word, Pequignet dares 'Made in France.' It's courageous, sometimes fragile, always respectable.

Iconic Products

Royale 300

The flagship watch, 42mm case, automatic Calibre Royale, clean dial. Pequignet's manifesto: a French manufacture movement in classic dress. Between €5,000 and €8,000. The kind of watch you buy to support a cause as much as to tell time. Wearing a Pequignet says: 'French watchmaking exists.'

Royale GMT

The traveler's version, Calibre Royale with GMT complication (dual time zone). For those who cross time zones while supporting French watchmaking. A French manufacture GMT caliber, when you think about it, it's almost surreal. 15 years ago, it didn't exist.

Attitude

The accessible range, Swiss movements (not the Calibre Royale), sporty or classic design. Entry into Pequignet from €1,500-3,000. For those who want the brand without the manufacture price. Honestly, it's a decent watch but not exceptional at this price. Pequignet's interest is the Calibre Royale, the rest is standard.
