Red Wing

American Goodyear welt boots, own tannery, Minnesota since 1905

Philosophy

American manufacturer founded in 1905 in Red Wing, Minnesota. Owns its own tannery. The Heritage line remains USA-made in Goodyear welt construction, one of the last bastions of authentic American workwear. Cult object in Japan.

History

In 1905, Charles Beckman was a shoe merchant in Red Wing, a small Minnesota town nestled on the banks of the Mississippi. Every day he saw farmers, loggers, and miners pass by. Their feet were in ruins. No one made footwear suitable for these trades. Beckman gathered fourteen local investors and launched the Red Wing Shoe Company. The idea was simple: a boot for every trade, designed to endure.

The company grew with working America. During both World Wars, Red Wing supplied the American army en masse. The Skytrooper, designed for World War II paratroopers, remains a legendary model. In peacetime, the brand continued to equip those who spent their days on their feet: in 1952, the 877 Moc Toe was born as a hunting boot under the name Irish Setter, with its Oro Russet leather and white Traction Tred crepe sole, which doesn't retain mud. It would become the brand's absolute icon. Two years later, the Postman 101 was designed for American mail carriers and police officers, built for eight hours of daily walking.

The Iron Ranger tells another story. In the 1920s, the iron miners of the Mesabi Range, in northern Minnesota, needed reinforced protection. Red Wing responded with a double leather overlay on the toe, the famous cap toe, long before the invention of steel toe caps. This functional detail became the aesthetic signature of the model.

What distinguishes Red Wing from almost all its competitors is verticality. The S.B. Foot Tanning Company, founded in 1872, has supplied Red Wing exclusively since the brand's inception. Officially acquired in 1986, this tannery produces the oil-tanned leathers that make the Heritage line famous. This entire line is constructed with Goodyear welt, making it fully re-soleable. Red Wing even has its own repair shop at the factory, capable of restoring boots decades old.

Four generations of the Sweasy family have led the company. In 2022, Allison Gettings became the first female president. The Minnesota factories are still running. In Japan and Europe, the Heritage line has become a cult object, worn far beyond construction sites. Vintage models sell for a fortune in Tokyo. But Red Wing has never been a fashion brand. It's a brand of utility, which eventually became beautiful by dint of being useful.

Iconic Products

Iron Ranger 8111

Cap-toe in Amber Harness leather. The most iconic Heritage model. Goodyear welt, made in Red Wing, Minnesota. Among enthusiasts, it's the first recommended purchase. The leather patinas beautifully - 5-year-old Iron Rangers look better than new ones.

Classic Moc 875

Moc toe in Oro Legacy leather. White Traction Tred sole. The original model that built Red Wing's reputation. In Japan, the 875 is a collector's item - vintage editions fetch fortunes in Tokyo. American workwear turned Japanese fashion icon.

Beckman (Flatbox)

The dressy boot in the Heritage range. Featherstone leather tanned in-house at S.B. Foot Tanning. More refined than the Iron Ranger, less raw. For those wanting Red Wing at the office. The Flatbox version (no toe reinforcement) ages even better - the leather collapses gently into a unique shape.
