A former firefighter, a Bohemian workshop, vegetable-tanned leather and waxed linen thread. Martin sews each bag bespoke, one by one, without catalog or algorithm. Carryology found him. The rest of the world is still looking.

Carryology spotted it among the brands that no one knows but that everyone should know. REHOSE is Martin, a single man in his workshop in South Bohemia, in the Czech Republic. “A company of one”, as Carryology says. A former firefighter, he has been sewing each bag by hand for over ten years.

Martin's story is that of a radical reconversion. A professional firefighter, he sought a creative outlet and began sewing bags for himself. The first prototype is rudimentary. The second is more accomplished. By the tenth, he found his language, utilitarian, sturdy, no-frills bags, built to last for decades. He leaves the fire department. REHOSE is born.

The process is that of the solo artisan taken to the extreme. Martin selects his leathers himself, vegetable tanned leather, full grain, thick, which will develop a patina over time. He cuts each piece according to the pattern (no laser cutting), sews by machine for the structural seams and by hand for the finishes, installs each rivet, each buckle, each strap. A REHOSE bag takes several days of work, production is counted in pieces per week, not per day.

There is no catalog in the classic sense. Each bag is made to measure, the customer discusses with Martin their needs, the intended use, the desired dimensions. 13 or 15 inch laptop? Water bottle compartment? Wide or narrow straps? The bag is then designed and sewn specifically. It's the Alpine Luddites model transposed to leather, the conversation precedes the order.

The materials are uncompromising. Vegetable tanned leather (no chrome, no chemical shortcuts), waxed linen thread for hand stitching, solid brass or stainless steel hardware. No plastic, no cheap zippers, no synthetic lining fabric. These are bags built like horse saddles, and they age like horse saddles.

Distribution is non-existent in a commercial sense. No resellers, no mass e-commerce, no in-store presence. We find REHOSE through word of mouth, through Carryology articles, through leather goods forums. Martin doesn't have a flashy e-commerce site, a simple site, a few photos, a contact form. That's all.

Waiting times are long, several weeks, sometimes more. One man, one workshop. No acceleration possible. That's the price of true craftsmanship: waiting is part of the process.

Prices are remarkably modest for custom handmade full grain leather, the bags are between €200 and €500. In the Czech Republic, living costs are lower than in Western Europe, which allows Martin to offer prices that his French or English equivalents could not match.
