Philosophy

Over two centuries of textile philanthropy. Røros Tweed embodies Peder Hiort's unique heritage: transforming a generous bequest into lasting craftsmanship, weaving Norwegian excellence into each blanket with pure mountain wool and the soul of a humanist tradition.

History

Røros is a mining town perched 628 meters above sea level in the Norwegian mountains, founded in the 17th century around copper mines. The winters are among the harshest in Scandinavia. In 1789, Peder Hiort, director of the mines, made a remarkable gesture: he bequeathed his entire fortune to train the less fortunate inhabitants in weaving and spinning. The idea is simple but visionary: to give miners' families a skill that will allow them to survive when the mines close.

For more than a century, domestic weaving developed in the homes of Røros. Women spin and weave wool from local sheep, creating throws and blankets of exceptional quality, adapted to extreme conditions. In 1938-1940, this ancestral tradition was formalized with the creation of Røros Tweed, a company which structured production while preserving inherited techniques.

The wool used is 100% Norwegian, from sheep breeds adapted to the harsh climate of the Scandinavian mountains. This wool has remarkable natural properties: thermal insulation, resistance to humidity, softness. The manufacturing process remains rooted in Røros, from raw wool to finished product. The city has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.

Today, Røros Tweed collaborates with the best contemporary Scandinavian designers: Anderssen & Voll, Hallgeir Homstvedt, among others. The collections combine the textile heritage of two and a half centuries with a refined Nordic design. Each blanket carries with it the story of a philanthropic legacy that has become a living tradition.
