Philosophy
Sailor is Japan's oldest fountain pen maker and produces the best nibs in the world. Each 21K gold nib is manufactured and hand-adjusted at the Hiroshima factory. The characteristic pencil-like feedback is beloved by purists. Sailor inks are among the most beautiful in the world.
History
In 1911, Kyugoro Sakata, an engineer in Kure, the naval port of Hiroshima, received a fountain pen brought back from England by a friend in the Royal Navy. The object fascinated him. With his brother, he founded the Sakata Manufactory and began producing gold nibs. The name Sailor came from that English sailor, and the anchor has remained in the logo.
Kure remains the birthplace and home base. The current state-of-the-art factory is built on the same site that has housed Sailor since 1911. Over a century of history in the same place. Sailor is Japan's oldest fountain pen maker, ahead of Pilot (1918) and Platinum (1919). Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
21-karat gold is an alloy unique to Sailor, softer and more flexible than standard 14K. Special nibs are where the brand pushes boundaries: the Naginata, inspired by the Japanese spear, creates lines that vary with angle. Cross Point combines two sizes in one. Zoom adjusts thickness with pressure. King Eagle, the ultimate 21K gold nib, is the pinnacle. The Nib Hospital allows personal adjustment by a master craftsman.
Among enthusiasts, Sailor is revered for its nib "feedback," the pencil-on-paper sensation purists love and Pilot doesn't offer. Pro Gear and 1911 are the classics. Seasonal limited editions (Shikiori) create an obsessive collector community. The King of Pen (KOP) in 21K, with its massive nib, is the segment's holy grail.
