Silky (Ciseaux)
High-quality kitchen scissors and utility shears, made in Seki by Marusho Industry
Not to be confused with Silky (pruning saws), which is an entirely different company (Um Kogyo Inc., based in Ono). Silky scissors are manufactured by Marusho Industry Inc. in Seki.
Philosophy
In Seki, scissors aren't a byproduct of cutlery. They're a blade in their own right, forged, tempered and sharpened with the same care as a chef's knife. Marusho has known this for 60 years.
History
Seki. A city of 65,000 in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. Blades have been forged here since the 13th century, Seki's blacksmiths supplied samurai with katanas. Today, the city has over 300 cutlery companies. It's the world capital of the cutting edge. Marusho Industry (丸章工業) was born here in the 1960s, first as a scissors manufacturer. No knives, no swords, scissors. The humblest object in cutlery. But in Seki, even scissors are treated like a noble blade. Same steel, same tempering, same sharpening. Marusho later launched Mcusta (folding knives) and Zanmai (kitchen knives), but Silky scissors remain the company's original heart. Watch for confusion: there's another Silky brand in Japan, Um Kogyo Inc., based in Ono, which makes pruning saws. No connection. Seki's Silky is scissors. Ono's Silky is saws. Japan is big enough for two Silkys.
