Philosophy

The authenticity of natural leather. Sonnenleder perpetuates vegetable pit tanning according to traditional recipes transmitted for generations, creating sustainable leather goods that become more beautiful over time under the action of sun and rain.

History

In 1986, in an era of steel and glass, Sonnenleder was born with a simple idea: create natural leather objects that live, breathe, and age beautifully. The leather is tanned using a seven-generation-old method handed down through seven generations of regional tanners: vegetable pit tanning (Grubengerbung). The hides are immersed in pits for months and slowly impregnated with plant extracts. The process is long and expensive, but it yields leather of incomparable quality, supple and alive.

In 1996, Andreas Morgenstern took over the company and its legacy. He understood that in an increasingly industrialized world, authenticity and durability were becoming rare values. Sonnenleder uses only cattle hides from Southern Germany, carefully selected from suppliers the house has worked with for decades. Every hide is sorted and graded by hand when it arrives at the workshop: surface structure, color nuances, each piece is unique.

Manufacturing remains artisanal. Traditional cutting, stitching, and finishing techniques are applied with know-how that cannot be learned from manuals. Sonnenleder products are designed to develop a patina over time, under sun and rain. Patina can appear only on high-quality leather that is pure and as minimally treated as possible. The more natural the surface, the more precious the leather. Every bag and every accessory carries the personal story of its owner. Sonnenleder calls this "natural luxury".
