Sub-Zero
Precision refrigerators and freezers, dual compressor, made in Wisconsin
Philosophy
Sub-Zero is obsessed with food preservation. The dual compressor, one for the refrigerator, one for the freezer, prevents odor transfer and maintains optimal humidity. Each appliance is designed to last at least 20 years, with spare parts available long after purchase.
History
Westye Bakke, 1930s, a garage in Madison, Wisconsin. Experimenting with refrigeration. In 1945 he founds Sub-Zero. Key innovation: dual compressor separating fridge and freezer circuits.
Family-owned - Jim Bakke (son) then next generation. Strategic acquisitions: Wolf Range (2000, pro ranges), Cove (2018, dishwashers). Still made in Madison.
specialist forums polarized: 'build quality noticeable every time I open the door' vs 'notorious for bad quality - like a Jaguar, low volume high complexity.' Expensive repairs, slow parts. The fridge for those who want American built-in and can afford the repairs.
