Sugiyama Metal
Nano-embossed iron pans and woks - BIFL cookware without chemical coating
Philosophy
Iron without compromise. In Tsubame, nano-embossing reinvents the iron pan to make it accessible to all, without resorting to chemical coatings.
History
Tsubame, Niigata Prefecture. Four centuries of metallurgy. The story begins at the start of the Kan'ei era, around 1624, when a local magistrate brought blacksmiths from Edo to teach nail-making to farmers affected by the Shinano River floods. In a few decades, over a thousand households were making nails. Then saws, sickles, knives. Today, Tsubame-Sanjo produces about 90% of Western-style cutlery made in Japan.
It was in this basin that Sugiyama Masao founded his pressing workshop in 1948. Pans, woks, stamped sheet metal utensils. The company navigated the decades as an industrial subcontractor, discreet and efficient. In 2011, the dual shock of the strong yen and Chinese imports disrupted the model. Rather than lowering prices, the fourth generation – Sugiyama Masataka – chose to create what foreign factories would not copy.
Nano Emboss is the answer. Micro-reliefs invisible to the naked eye, etched into the iron, which increase the oil retention surface and reduce contact with food. The result: an iron pan that seasons easily, without chemical coating, and weighs 765 grams for a 26 cm size. An achievement for iron.
In 2014, the arrival of Ogawa Yosuke, from outside the sector, triggered the proprietary brand strategy. In 2017, 4w1h was born – "5W1H without the Where, because the kitchen doesn't move." The team brings together a designer, a graphic artist, a writer, all from Niigata. The Hot Sandwich Solo, launched in October 2019, went viral six months later: a single folded slice of bread, an anti-error two-tone design, anti-leak wave seals. Solo campers and students eagerly snap it up. Good Design Award 2020.
Users praise the lightness of the pans and the effectiveness of the nano-embossing. The price-quality ratio is considered remarkable for Made in Japan. The criticism? The initial seasoning process, which intimidates beginners. But that's the price of raw iron's authenticity, without chemical artifice.
OEM remains the core business. Sugiyama manufactures for appliance brands whose names are not disclosed. 4w1h represents 10 to 15% of turnover, but it's the storefront that attracts new industrial clients. The dual sword strategy, as they call it.
