Philosophy
Tanner Goods believes in creating objects that are 'Worth Holding Onto.' By combining premium American vegetable-tanned leathers with traditional hand-stitching in their Portland workshop, they ensure that every core piece becomes more beautiful with use. While the brand has expanded into textiles, its heart remains in artisanal leathercraft.
History
In 2006, Sam Huff and Jevan Lautz launched Tanner Goods in Portland, Oregon, with a simple yet ambitious goal: to create high-quality leather goods that were truly built to last. Starting with just a handful of hand-crafted belts and wallets, the brand adopted the motto "Worth Holding Onto," a philosophy that continues to drive its production today. Huff famously summarized his approach by stating he didn't want "a ton of shit" in his life, prioritizing quality and utility over sheer volume.
The foundation of Tanner Goods is its commitment to premium American materials. The brand sources its leather from historic domestic tanneries like Wickett & Craig in Pennsylvania, which has specialized in vegetable tanning since 1867, and Hermann Oak in St. Louis. Every core leather product is crafted in their Portland workshop, featuring hand-cut pieces and meticulous saddle stitching. This dedication to craftsmanship has earned them a loyal following on communities like les passionnés, where users frequently share photos of wallets still in use after over a decade, having developed deep, unique patinas.
As the brand expanded, it introduced a range of waxed canvas bags celebrated for their "incredibly luxurious" feel. In 2016, Tanner Goods opened a flagship store in Portland's Albina district, complete with an adjoining bar called The Wayback. However, the company's growth has brought new challenges. While the core leather business remains rooted in Portland, some newer textile products, such as the Lite Pack, are manufactured in China. This move has occasionally blurred the brand's original "Portland-made" identity. Despite these changes, Tanner Goods remains a benchmark for the American heritage aesthetic, provided the buyer knows to check the label for each specific item.
