The Flat Head ⚠️ With reservations

Selvedge denim and rockabilly Americana - signature vertical fades and flannels unanimously considered the best in the world

🇯🇵 Japan, Nagano Founded in 1996 $$$

Reservations: bankruptcy in 2020, post-restructuring comeback with reduced operation. Very limited availability, especially outside Japan. The founder's resilience is admirable but residual risk is real.

Philosophy

The Flat Head is inspired by 1950s American culture: rockabilly, motorcycles, hot rods. Founder Masayoshi Kobayashi creates denims with distinctive vertical fades instantly recognizable. TFH flannels are unanimously considered the best in the world. After bankruptcy in 2020, the brand returned with a refocused operation.

History

Masayoshi Kobayashi, rockabilly fan, 1950s American cars and vintage clothing enthusiast, founded The Flat Head in 1996 in Nagano prefecture. The aesthetic crosses Japanese heritage denim with fifties Americana. Kobayashi, always smiling, created a complete universe: five labels, from denim to leather to knitwear.

Pioneer Denim, launched in 2001, was the result of years of iteration. Kobayashi, a former vintage dealer, had been struck by an old pair of jeans with pronounced vertical texture. He worked with a Kojima mill to create a unique slubby denim. Pioneer became an instant classic, one of the denims that fueled the selvedge scene and fade culture explosion. Signature vertical fades with aggressive contrast became the benchmark.

TFH flannels are unanimously considered the best in the world. Horsehide leather jackets, produced by Stockburg (in-house leather workshop), are legendary.

Then the fall. Kobayashi overexpanded: restaurant, non-fashion ventures, too many lines. In August 2019, The Flat Head filed for bankruptcy. Products vanished from shelves, international stockists closed accounts.

Sirius Partners, a Japanese PE firm, took over the apparel business. Kobayashi stepped aside but the entire team stayed. No hard reset, just a refocus on strengths: denim, loopwheeled knits, leather. Leather jackets, now produced in-house by Stockburg instead of outsourced, are better than before. International stockists (Franklin & Poe, Rivet & Hide, Okayama Denim) confirm: The Flat Head is back, and in better shape.

Iconic Products

3001 (Straight)

The flagship. Pioneer denim, signature vertical fades starting near-black evolving into spectacular contrasts. 'Great modern cut with vintage denim, definitively superior without showing off.' Known weak point: fragile stitching (hence the reinforced S.E. version).

FN-series Flannels

The best flannels in the world - not an opinion, an les passionnés consensus. Woven in Japan, thick, soft, indestructible. The product fans miss most since the bankruptcy.

3005 (Slim Tapered)

The slim tapered version of Flat Head denim. Same pioneer denim, same vertical fades, modern cut. For those wanting the Flat Head without the straight cut.
