Topo Designs
Colorful outdoor bags, retro-modern design from Denver, Colorado, 2008
Production largely offshored to Vietnam. The 'Made in Colorado' positioning gave way to mass-market lifestyle. Decent product but without the authenticity that justified the price.
Philosophy
Born in Denver with a promise: colorful outdoor bags, made in the USA. The promise went to Vietnam, the prices stayed. Now it's mass-market lifestyle in Cordura with chain collabs. Many longtime fans point out the contrast: once made in Colorado, now largely Vietnam. The Rover Pack lost its passport.
History
Jedd Rose and Mark Hansen found themselves in Colorado in the late 2000s, frustrated with the outdoor market. Big brands were anonymous, with no human connection to the product. In 2008, Jedd bought a sewing machine and started making backpacks in his Fort Collins basement. Mark traveled around Denver and the front range looking for local partners who could produce at scale.
The concept was immediate: colorful outdoor bags, retro-modern design, made in Colorado. 1000D Cordura, YKK zippers, leather base on the Klettersack. The "mountain town hipster" aesthetic exploded on Instagram and outdoor blogs. The Rover Pack and Klettersack became instant classics. REI, Backcountry, Nordstrom picked up the brand. Topo opened a Denver flagship.
Collaborations followed - Woolrich, Nalgene, x-Pac - amplifying visibility. Distribution in 30+ countries, 1,200 retail points, six continents. The brand targeted young Millennials and Gen Z wanting accessible, aesthetic outdoor gear.
In March 2023, Topo received significant investment from Gart Capital Partners, with plans to add 50 roles at Denver HQ within three years. Acceleration was on.
But the shift had started much earlier. Production slid from Colorado to Vietnam. Gradually, quietly. By 2025, no bags are made in the USA. Early buyers who paid a premium for "Made in Colorado" often report a difference on newer runs: less precise stitching, lighter materials, and more variable finishing. Some now prefer older, US-made pieces.
Prices haven't dropped proportionally. The "Made in USA" that justified the premium is gone, but the price tags remain. Many longtime fans point out the contrast: once made in Colorado, now largely Vietnam. The mass-market repositioning is complete: Urban Outfitters, Zappos, chain collabs. Product is still decent for current pricing, but it's no longer the artisanal Denver brand. It's generic outdoor lifestyle with a nice logo.
