1829. Robert Peel established London's police, Abraham Lincoln made his first political speech, Louis Braille invented his system, and Joseph Tricker founded his shoe factory in Northampton. Victoria wouldn't be queen for eight more years.

Northampton, in England's heart, was already the shoe capital. By 1840, the town had 1,821 shoemakers. Walter James Barltrop, Joseph Tricker's son-in-law, made his first pair of boots at age seven in 1848. Simple but prophetic: the prototype for the waterproof country boots that would make the house's reputation.

The factory at 56-60 St. Michael's Road opened in 1904 and never moved. It's a Grade II listed building. The film Kinky Boots was shot there. The Goodyear welt machine arrived in the early 20th century after Walter James Barltrop's buying trip to New York.

English farmers swore by Tricker's country boots. In 2021, 86 workers produced about 1,000 pairs weekly. 80% of sales are export - Tokyo store, considering Korea and the US.

But 2023-2024 brought declining revenue and losses. In May 2025, James Fayed acquired 71% via Blu Heartknot UK. The Barltrop family, owners for five generations, remains in management. New strategy: DTC pivot, wholesale deprioritized. 79 employees at acquisition.

The biggest change since 1829. Among enthusiasts, Tricker's remains the best country boot on the market. Whether the ownership change preserves the soul remains to be seen.
