Truce Designs

Recycled Dyneema and Kevlar bags, solo artisan in Portland

Philosophy

Truce Designs is a one-man workshop in Portland, transforming Dyneema offcuts, Kevlar, and sailcloth into unique technical bags. Recycling here isn't an argument, it's the raw material dictating the design.

History

Luke Mathers learned to sew at North Sails in Portland, Oregon, repairing sails and making boat covers. He saw chunks of sail material ending up in the scrap bin - technical waterproof fabric, tested by the elements, perfectly functional. Truce Designs was born there: recycling used sails into waterproof urban bags.

Serious racing sailors replace their sails every 5 years. Old ones pile up in garages. Luke started making crew bags from their own sails - the personal connection with the material was immediate. Then expanded: bike bags, daily bags, duffles.

The Drop Liner system is Truce's technical signature. A waterproof inner liner separating wet from dry - wet shoes outside the liner, laptop inside. The top flap keeps rain out effectively. Functional design born from actual daily cycling experience in Portland.

Truce is a 1% For The Planet member. Collaboration with Trew Gear (Portland ski clothing) making duffles and accessories from their old products. Consistent approach: recycled materials, local production, minimal impact.

On enthusiasts: "The liner design works super well for separating wet from dry." Among enthusiasts, favorable comparison to TBB Conceal at $99 on sale. One user reports 5 years daily use before a plastic closure snapped under overload. The Daypack is most popular.

Small artisanal Portland operation, not a mass brand. Exactly the micro-brand Carryology follows with enthusiasm.
