Entry-level raw Japanese selvedge, sewn in Canada. By the founder of Naked & Famous.

🇨🇦 Canada, Montreal Founded in 2010 $

Philosophy

Created by Brandon Svarc (Naked & Famous) to make Japanese selvedge accessible. 14.5 oz raw denim, sewn in Canada, no marketing, no frills. The cheapest real selvedge on the market, under $100.

History

Brandon Svarc has denim in his blood. His grandfather ran Paulrose Products, a workwear brand in the 1960s. When Svarc launched Naked and Famous in Montreal, he picked up that family thread with a modern and sometimes eccentric approach to Japanese denim. But one question nagged him: how to make selvedge accessible to those who do not have 200 dollars for a first pair of raw jeans?

The answer is The Unbranded Brand. Launched in 2010, the line is radically simple. Japanese 14.5oz selvedge, cut and sewn in the same Montreal workshop as Naked and Famous, by the same team. Three basic cuts: UB101 skinny, UB201 tapered, UB301 straight. No visible logo, no advertising campaign, no brand story. The name says it all: no brand, just jeans.

The price hovers around 80 to 100 US dollars. For real Japanese selvedge sewn in Canada, that price exists nowhere else on the market. The r/rawdenim community has made it THE recommendation for anyone wanting their first pair of raw denim without breaking the bank. No debate, no nuance: Unbranded is the entry point to selvedge.

In 2024, Bahzad Trinos, co-founder of Naked and Famous, left the company. But the Unbranded formula remains unchanged. That is its strength: there is nothing to change in a product that promises nothing other than what it is. Honest selvedge denim, at the lowest possible price, without storytelling or frills. In a market that loves telling stories, that is almost subversive.
