Waldmann

Precious metal writing instruments, Pforzheim goldsmithery in service of writing

🇩🇪 Germany, Birkenfeld Founded in 1918 $$$

Philosophy

Pforzheim, the Goldstadt. Where Montblanc does plastic at €500, Waldmann does sterling silver 925. The body is magnificent. The steel nib, less so. The Commander 25 with gold nib is the real Waldmann - the steel Tango is paying for goldsmithing without the writing.

History

Adolf Waldmann founded his manufacture in 1918 in Pforzheim, the Goldstadt - Germany's jewelry capital since the 18th century, 80% of the country's jewelry exports. He applied goldsmithing techniques to writing instruments: gold and silver mechanical pencils.

Over a century later, Waldmann still manufactures in Birkenfeld (near Pforzheim), everything in 925 sterling silver. That's their absolute signature - where Montblanc does plastic at €500, Waldmann does solid silver.

On enthusiasts: the Tango divides. 'WOW' for aesthetics and smoothness. But steel nibs at $170+ disappoint - 'nib writes like a nail' and 'below average in this category.' You're paying for the silver body, not the nib. The Commander 25 with gold nib corrects this.

Iconic Products

Tango (sterling silver)

The signature model. 925 sterling silver body, #5 steel nib. 'WOW' for aesthetics, 'like a nail' for the nib. You're paying for goldsmithing, not writing. From ~$170.

Commander 25 (gold nib)

The complete Waldmann. Sterling silver + gold nib. Where the Tango frustrates with its steel nib, the Commander 25 delivers the full experience. Price goes up, but writing finally matches the body.
