Philosophy

The shoe through a cobbler's eyes. Ypson's designs shoes built to last because its founder spent years repairing everyone else's. Every model is drawn to be resoled, maintained, and worn for a long time.

History

Manuel Pinto was not destined for shoemaking. Trained as a farrier, he worked with metal before crossing paths with an Italian master bootmaker who would change everything. The apprenticeship was long, demanding, and old-school. But when you know how to shoe a horse, you understand what precision means. The gesture is different, but the rigor remains the same.

In 1986, he opened La Cordonnerie de Monceau - ten square meters in Paris's 8th arrondissement, tucked between Haussmannian buildings. There was no flashy storefront or launch campaign. Just a cobbler repairing the shoes of local Parisians with a level of care that major brands had long stopped providing.

By repairing hundreds of pairs, he learned what makes a shoe last - and what kills it. Sloppy stitching, glued soles, and overly thin leathers that crack during the first winter. Armed with this repairer's expertise, he began designing his own models. These shoes were conceived from the start to be resoled, maintained, and passed down. It’s a rare approach: moving from repair to creation.

The range is classic without being stagnant. Oxfords, Derbies, loafers, and boots. Balanced shapes - neither too bulky nor too tapered - tailored for the city. The leathers come from the finest French tanneries: box-calf from Annonay and hides from Tanneries du Puy. These are names that make connoisseurs' eyes light up. Construction is entrusted to specialized workshops in Portugal, near Porto, and in Spain. Goodyear welting is used for robustness, while Blake stitching is chosen for the elegance of more urban models.

Finding welted shoes of this quality for between 165 and 250 euros has become rare in Paris - especially at 202 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where the shop sits alongside houses that charge four times as much for often inferior finishes. A second location at 192 boulevard Haussmann completes the set.

The business remains strictly family-run. Manuel, his wife, and their son Pedro run the shop like a neighborhood business. They know you, they remember your feet, and they offer genuine advice. They also handle the maintenance and resoling of their own models. This dual identity as creator and cobbler is true luxury: knowing how to make and knowing how to fix.

Ypson's has never sought fame. There is zero presence on specialized forums and no social media buzz. It’s a secret shared by word of mouth among elegant Parisians who know. This is a house that prefers to fit its customers well rather than communicate well.
