Zimmerli of Switzerland

Swiss luxury underwear and lingerie since 1871. Founded by Pauline Zimmerli-Bäurlin, mechanical knitting pioneer. Silk, Sea Island cotton.

🇨🇭 Switzerland, Aarburg Founded in 1871 $$$$

Acquired by Nordeck International Holding in 2007, no longer family-owned since 1920. Some forums (StyleForum) report declining quality and production no longer entirely Swiss. The history is exceptional, the current reality less clear.

Philosophy

Underwear as a luxury object. Since 1871, Zimmerli uses the noblest materials - Grège silk, Sea Island cotton, extra-fine merino - for what nobody sees. The philosophy is simple: invisible comfort is true luxury.

History

Aarburg, canton of Aargau, 1871. Johann Jakob Zimmerli's red dye business has just gone bankrupt, killed by aniline dyes. One day, he reads about a new knitting machine invented in the US by Isaac William Lamb. He sends his wife Pauline to Basel to train with Lamb's agents. Pauline Zimmerli-Bäurlin, a former seamstress and needlework teacher, returns with the know-how and launches production of stockings and underwear.

Success is immediate. By 1874, hiring is needed. Pauline invents her own knitting machine and sends plans to the US. That same year, Zimmerli receives Switzerland's first double-needle knitting machine, enabling ribbed fabric production - the foundations of an entirely new industrial sector. By 1878, Zimmerli garments sell at Le Bon Marché in Paris. Gold medal at the 1889 Paris Exposition, then again in 1900 and 1910 in Brussels.

Pauline dies in 1914. In 1920, the company leaves the family. In 1965, acquisition of a factory in Coldrerio (Ticino). Crises, licenses, stagnation. In 1992, cousins Walter and Hans Borner take over and refocus on high-end men's underwear. Women's relaunch in 1998, Walter Borner named Swiss Entrepreneur of the Year in 2006.

In 2007, new acquisition by Nordeck International Holding. This is where things get complicated. On StyleForum, connoisseurs alert: 'quality control very bad now', 'no longer made in Switzerland?', 'know-how is gone'. On specialist forums , Sea Island Cotton is still praised - 'well worth the price' - but signals are mixed.

Zimmerli remains an extraordinary story - a 19th century Swiss pioneer who invented a sector. But today's company is no longer Pauline's. The heritage is immense, the current reality requires verification.
